Kayla Childs, also known as “Black Buttafly”, is a New Jersey native hailing from New Brunswick, New Jersey. Her roots are in Gospel, Jazz, and Soul music. Her influences include Patrice Rushen, Herbie Hancock, Stevie Wonder, and J Dilla to name a few. She is an artist, singer, songwriter, producer, band-leader, and curator currently living and playing in Philadelphia, PA. She has traveled the Across the United States, U.K., Europe, and Australia touring professionally. She has played, studied, and recorded with artists & producers such as Ms. Lauryn Hill, Pete Rock, Lenny White, KeiyaA, RES, Grammy nominated drummer Steve Mckie, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Khemist, Ivy Sole, Orion Sun, Son Little, Duendita, Hannibal Burress & Grammy Award Winning Artist, Jermaine Holmes. 


Kayla has had the opportunity to perform and share her own music under the Moniker “Black Buttafly” performing and opening for Braxton Cook, Meshelle Ndegeocello, Cisco Swank, Kiefer, and Kamasi Washington. She is also a member of Tri-State area musical collectives Omar’s Hat, Brandon Woody’s UPENDO, and has formed a new collective of genius musicians, known as “The Nu School Collective”. Black Buttaflys’ long awaited debut ep, “Fly Free” has just released this fall with her single “Everybody Needs Love” leading the way.
